#2013alive: How do we upgrade our skills?

It’s week 4 for our 12 Months of Wellness, and we’re checking in with the alive staff. How do we upgrade our skills?

This week for our 12 Months of Wellness, we’re heading back to class—or to a networking event, or to a public lecture, or to a professional seminar—to upgrade our skills.

Colleen Grant, Editor: “I graduated last May, so it’s been nice to have a bit of a break from courses and seminars. On the other hand, the lack of homework is kind of like a phantom limb … I sometimes worry that I’m not spending enough time studying (for an exam that doesn’t exist). To dip my feet back into the academic pool, I’d love to take a course on something random and fun—mythology, conversational Japanese, or even wine. Sadly, however, these would probably benefit my trivia skills more than my professional capabilities.”

Jennifer Procyshyn, Account Manager: “I took the Natural Health Fundamentals course offered by the alive Academy. It taught me about the nutrition building blocks, supplementation and functional foods, mind-body medicine … Pretty much everything I needed to know about living a healthy lifestyle, naturally.

“I also attended CHFA West [a] in April, which introduced me to the natural health industry and a variety of companies throughout Canada and parts of the United States.”

Vince Yim, Digital Content Coordinator: “Given the shifts in the media industry, it seemed like a good idea to upgrade my skills in web development at BCIT part time. Over the past two years, I’ve been upgrading my skills in HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and Adobe Flash (which is still relevant, despite the industry-wide attempts to replace it). I’m currently taking my last course to get my Associate Certificate in the Web Technologies program.”

Leah Payne, Editor: “Since alive is constantly evolving and growing, so is the alive team! That means that we update our skills on a regular basis, such as by taking courses in social media and search engine optimization tactics. This way, we can stay ahead of the curve.”

Bronwyn Wilson, Marketing and Digital Communications Specialist: “To grow myself all-around I attend regular leadership conferences three times per year. My husband and I really enjoy a weekend of captivating engagement with leaders in their industry who speak more so about overall leadership and success principles, and not super industry-specific. Plus the association with other people who are driven and excited about continuing to advance and grow is really refreshing.”
